Pattern Overview

Difficulty: Beginner

Yarn Weight: Worsted Weight (medium)

Estimated Time: 25-30 hours

Finished Size: Approximately 36 inches x 36 inches

Yarn Required: 1400-1600 yards

Materials

  • Yarn: Worsted weight, 1400-1600 yards total. We recommend Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick for softness and washability (approximately 8-10 skeins)
  • Needles: US 9 (5.5mm) circular needles, 36+ inches long to accommodate the width of the blanket
  • Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

16 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches in seed stitch. Maintain consistent gauge for uniform appearance.

Abbreviations

K = Knit
P = Purl
CO = Cast on
BO = Bind off
RS = Right side

Pattern Instructions

Cast-On Row: Using long-tail cast-on, CO 144 stitches.

Seed Stitch Pattern (2 rows): Seed stitch creates an attractive bumpy texture. Work as follows:

Row 1 (RS): K1, P1 across entire row, ending with K1

Row 2 (WS): P1, K1 across entire row, ending with P1

Rows 3-184: Repeat Rows 1-2 pattern

Your blanket will have 184 total rows when complete. This creates a 36-inch square (approximately). As you knit, the blanket will drape slightly, so don't worry if it looks slightly rectangular while on the needles—it will square up after blocking.

Bind-Off Row: Loosely bind off all stitches. Using a needle one size larger helps prevent a tight bind-off edge. Bind off in pattern (knit stitches are knitted off, purl stitches are purled off) for a stretchy edge

Finishing Instructions

  1. Weave in all yarn ends using a yarn needle. For a blanket, spend extra time weaving—use longer paths so ends don't pull out
  2. Block the blanket by laying it flat on a clean carpet, yoga mat, or blocking mat. Gently pin or weight the corners to straighten edges
  3. Lightly mist with water and allow to dry completely. This usually takes 24 hours. Blocking sets the stitches and evening out the texture beautifully
  4. After blocking, gently fold and present with pride. You've created a treasured family heirloom

Care Instructions

  • Hand wash in cool water with wool-specific soap, or machine wash on delicate cycle if yarn is acrylic
  • Lay flat to dry—never hang a wet blanket as the weight stretches the fibers
  • Store in a breathable cotton bag or pillowcase, not plastic
