Pattern Overview

Difficulty: Beginner-Intermediate

Yarn Weight: Bulky Weight (thick)

Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

Finished Size: Fits most adult heads (19-20 inches circumference)

Yarn Required: 250-300 yards

Materials

  • Yarn: Bulky weight, 250-300 yards. We recommend Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (2 skeins or 1 large skein)
  • Needles: US 11 (8mm) circular needles, 16-inch cable for working in the round
  • Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers (or scrap yarn)

Gauge

11 stitches and 14 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch. For a hat, gauge is important for proper fit.

Abbreviations

K = Knit
P = Purl
K2tog = Knit 2 together
CO = Cast on
BO = Bind off
Rnd = Round

Pattern Instructions

Cast-On: Using long-tail cast-on, CO 56 stitches. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist stitches.

Ribbing (Rnds 1-6): (K1, P1) around. Repeat this pattern for 6 rounds. The ribbed cuff stretches slightly for comfortable fit and stays in place on the head.

Body (Rnds 7-18): K56 (knit every stitch around). Work even in stockinette for 12 rounds, creating a smooth fabric.

Crown Decreases: Shape the crown by decreasing stitches. After Round 18, begin decreasing:

Rnd 19: K2tog around (28 stitches remain)

Rnd 20: K28

Rnd 21: K2tog around (14 stitches remain)

Rnd 22: K14

Rnd 23: K2tog around (7 stitches remain)

Bind-Off: Cut yarn, leaving a 12-inch tail. Thread through remaining 7 stitches using yarn needle and pull tight to close the crown.

Finishing Instructions

  1. Weave the crown tail through the closing stitches again (back and forth) for security
  2. Weave in the cast-on tail along the inside edge of the ribbing
  3. Gently stretch the hat to even out stitches and help it hold its shape
  4. Try it on and adjust the cuff by folding if desired

Sizing Notes

  • Smaller Hat: CO 48 stitches instead of 56 for a child-sized hat
  • Larger Hat: CO 64 stitches for a larger adult head
  • Cuff Height: Knit ribbing for 8-10 rounds if you prefer a taller cuff that can be folded down
