Pattern Overview

Difficulty: Intermediate

Yarn Weight: Worsted Weight (medium)

Estimated Time: 8-10 hours

Finished Size: Fits most adult hands (approximately 3.5 inches wide, 7 inches long)

Yarn Required: 200-250 yards (both mitts)

Materials

  • Yarn: Worsted weight, 200-250 yards total. We recommend Red Heart Super Saver Yarn (2 skeins)
  • Needles: US 7 (4.5mm) double-pointed needles or 8-inch circular needles for small circumference knitting
  • Notions: Stitch marker, yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Accurate gauge ensures proper fit.

Abbreviations

K = Knit
P = Purl
K2tog = Knit 2 together
M1 = Make 1 increase
CO = Cast on
BO = Bind off

Pattern Instructions (Make 2)

Cast-On: Using long-tail cast-on, CO 28 stitches. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist.

Cuff (Rnds 1-8): (K1, P1) around for 8 rounds. Ribbing creates a stretchy cuff that stays in place.

Body (Rnds 9-22): K28 (knit every stitch) for 14 rounds in stockinette stitch.

Thumb Opening: This section leaves an opening for the thumb.

Rnd 23: K7, bind off 8 stitches, K13 (12 stitches remain on right side of opening)

Rnd 24: K7, CO 8 stitches over the bound-off stitches, K13. Total: 28 stitches again

Final Body (Rnds 25-28): K28 for 4 more rounds in stockinette.

Top Cuff (Rnds 29-32): (K1, P1) around for 4 rounds. Ribbed edge prevents curling.

Bind-Off: Loosely bind off all stitches, binding off in pattern (K1, P1 pattern continues).

Finishing Instructions

  1. Weave in all yarn ends using a yarn needle
  2. The thumbhole may feel a bit loose—this is correct. When you wear the mitt, your thumb naturally stretches the opening to the right size
  3. Try on and ensure the ribbed cuffs are snug but not tight—they should stretch comfortably over your hand
  4. Gently block by laying flat and misting lightly with water, then allow to dry

Customization Notes

  • Longer Mitts: Add 4-6 more rounds to the main body (Rnds 9-22) for mitts that extend further up the forearm
  • Tighter Fit: Cast on 24 stitches instead of 28 for a snugger fit
  • Looser Fit: Cast on 32 stitches for a roomier version
